Getting back on track after the holidays

It’s after the holiday season, and the whirlwind of excitement is starting to fade. Now it’s time to shake off the holiday hoorahs and get back into the swing of things. But after a month of holiday parties and potlucks, this can be a daunting and difficult task.

Well, don’t worry – just take it one step at a time. Let’s look at some helpful tips you can try this post-holiday season to help get you feeling better and back into your normal routine!

Here are our 5 tips to getting back on track:

1. First things first – let go of any guilt!

Yeah, you may have over-indulged during the holidays, but who hasn’t? This is a normal part of the season. Food is much more than just nourishment. For many of us it’s a social and cultural part of life that brings people together. Remember this and let go of any guilt you may have. Sure, you may have had an extra piece of your Grandma’s pie. But it brought a smile to her face...and yours. So the most important thing you can do that first day post-holiday is be kind to yourself and realize that it’s a new day!

2. Water, water...and more water

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water and stay properly hydrated. Start your morning off with a large glass of H20 and continue drinking lots of water throughout the day. Try adding some fruit to your water for added taste. Not only does water help flush wastes from your body, it can also aid with digestion and keep you regular. This is especially necessary after some time eating out of your norm. Keep a water bottle with you at all times and remember to drink up!

3. Don’t skip breakfast...or any meal for that matter!

After spending the holiday season eating a little more than you’re used to, it’s natural to try to skip out on breakfast, or maybe even a couple of meals. But if you’re hungry, skipping meals may lead to overeating later in the day. Don’t deprive yourself because you feel you have to. Guilt is a negative emotion that is proven not to be a motivator, so who needs it. Instead, focus on what's ahead, and take small steps towards your goals. Make yourself a delicious, balanced meal that includes fiber and protein to nourish your body and keep you felling satisfied longer.

4. Show your #Plantlove

We always show our #plantlove, even during the holiday season. But, after a few weeks of higher saturated fats and sugary foods, it’s even more important to get back to foods that provide us the valuable vitamins, minerals, and fiber we need in our day-to-day lives. Sticking to whole foods is an easy way to do this! Need some plant-spiration? Check out the sample plant-based menu below for some recipes to try this post-holiday season!

5. Get Moving!

We get it. You haven’t stopped all holiday season. Between the running around to finish your holiday shopping, and the scrambling to make three holiday parties in one day, of course you’d want to lay on the couch and binge-watch Netflix for the next five days. But in between some of that relaxation time it’s important to try and get moving. One of the best ways to get back into a routine is to set time aside each day for some form of physical activity. Take the dog for a brisk walk, or go with a friend. Find a 30-minute exercise or yoga video online. Anything to get you off the couch and active!
