2019 Trends in Food and Health

In 2018 we saw the rise of the ‘keto’ diet, the continued popularity of organic foods, and plant-based eating became more mainstream than ever before. But what does 2019 have in store? A few interesting reports have recently come out which give us insight and predictions for what we can expect to hear more of this coming year.

Goodbye ‘one-diet-fits-all'

The Canadian-based marketing agency, Nourish Food Marketing, just released their third annual Trend Report looking at the shift in the food and health landscape. One notable trend that arose from the report is a change from ‘one-diet-fits-all' to a more personalized and customized way of eating. The days of generalized food pyramids are dwindling, as more and more people are experimenting with their own eating patterns. It’s very likely we’ll continue to see a rise in the number of people who identify as having a specific approach to eating, whether that’s keto, paleo, dairy-free, or whole foods.

Plant-based is still on the rise as a ‘way of eating’. It is seen by many as a kinder, healthier and more sustainable lifestyle for the sake of animals, our bodies and planet Earth. Mother Raw couldn’t agree more, so show your #plantlove this 2019!

The rise of cannabis

cannabis leavesIt’s been quite the year for cannabis. Recently legalized recreationally in Canada, this plant is quickly gaining traction in the food and health industry. Chemical components of the cannabis plant– cannabidiol (CBD) and terpenes– are long thought to have medicinal properties related to the treatment of pain and migraines.  Regulations for cannabis-infused foods are expected to be ready one year after legalization (occurred August 2018), so anticipate Canadian health and wellness companies to jump on this opportunity very soon. Although cannabis is not legal in all States in the US, there has still been experimentation with non-cannabis sources of cannabinoids in supplements and skin care, showing us just how hot this topic is right now!

Make room for mushrooms

Mushrooms are rich in phytochemicals, which are known to have antioxidant properties. As more and more research comes out on their use as a functional food, there is no question that we’ll be seeing more mushroom-related products in the food, supplement, and skin care in 2019!

Booming flavors

As the interest in clean-label products grows, so does the interest in ‘natural flavors’. Herbal, botanical, and root flavors such as turmeric, lemongrass, and ginger are expected to be showcased in more foods this year.

Do you know which other flavor is making a comeback? Smoked! With the growing interest in meat replacements, many people are interested in finding that signature smokiness you’d typically find in meat. In fact, ‘smokeless smoke’ flavors are popping up in many food products already. ‘Smokeless smoke’ flavor replicating the taste of wood-fired products, but without any of the harmful by-products. Watch out for this innovative flavor this coming year! Until then, try smoked paprika for an easy smoke-flavor hack

It’s all in the packaging

Whole Foods Market recently released their “Top 10 trends for 2019”. One of their predictions is a rise in environmentally conscious packaging. As our concern for the environment and a more sustainable food system grows, both companies and consumers are taking action. Whether it’s a ban on straws, reduced plastic in packaging, or choosing reusable materials, expect a positive trend towards eco-friendly packaging in 2019!

Did you know here at Mother Raw, our products are packaged in glass bottles? We want to do our part for the environment and choose materials that are recyclable and reusable!
